ich bin erst letzte woche nach einer vierwöchigen reise durch tansania aus dar es salaam wieder in berlin eingetroffen. nur spontan hab ich grade auf die khb-homepage geguckt und euer projekt bemerkt. toll! noch viel freude bei eurem trip! ich kann nur für tansania und deren menschen sprechen: ich bin total begeister!
toll sind alle selbstgezeichneten schilder und die stempelschnitzer in moshi!
(ab oktober beginnt mein studium in weissensee)

Hi all!
Sorry for the lack of updates on the site! We are now squeezing every last bit out of our trip and therefore we don spend so much time behind the computer. We can promise that everything will be updated once we get home and get some more time. We are currently in Lusotho, Tanzania but will leave this afternoon for Dar Es Salaam and the end of the trip. After all arrangements with the car and tickets home we hope to be back in Europe in the beginning of September. Looking forward to hot showers and proper bread...

i just spent a month in kenya, and i think your project is an excellent idea. helping those forgotten individuals in the kiberia slum through a hands-on approach, is such a gesture of peace that the world needs to recognize these days. best of luck with your project! next time i visit kenya, and pass through this troubled area, i hope to see many of your designs being implemented. :)

Saknar dig Staffe...båten är i havet och vädret är strålande, klockan är 22,35 och det är fortfarande 20 grader och ljust. in nairobi gibt es einen design und management center habe dort mwangi mathenge mwangimathenge@hotmail.com, mwangimathenge@yahoo.co.uk kennen gelernt falls ihr noch kontakte sucht ist er vielleicht eine anlaufstelle. dessweiteren gab es einen professor für desin mr ngolube am design department in nairobi. allerdings wollte er die schule verlassen.

I have just read with great excitment your last 3 entries (Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia). I can understand everything that you are feeling and I agree with all of your comments. Hey, such a contrast Sudan and Ethiopia ! I remember those nights in th Nubian desert by the railway. It was great with the sunsetting in the west as the full moon was rising in the east. Yes Ethiopia is hard going. It was the toughest part of the whole year for the Landy, especially from Nairobi to Marsibit. Thats where the shock absorbers gave up and we sayed at a Catholic Mission in the middle of nowhere - but the preist had some Landrover shock absorbers! - That was OUR miracle ! I am so sad to hear of the engine problems. I hope so much that it all gets sorted out properly and cheaply - I would hate it to ruin your trip. Very best wishes to both of you and I hope you have lots of good fortune and luck to come. Be safe and enjoy - its been a fantstic read so far.

Greetings from a sunny (what else could you expect) Djibouti. Hope everything will be ok on the infamous "moyaleroad", really a piece of cake (compared to Angola or the Congos). The shipping rates from djibouti to Jordan turned out a little bit to much for me (1400 USDollars for the car, 550 for the flight) so instead I will try my luck crossing Dankalia and ship from Massawa in Eritrea. Heard of a once a week ferry to Jeddah, that could be interesting (if I can get a Saudi visa). All the best,

Hallo ihr beiden, ich finde das eine super Sache, die ihr da vorhabt und ich sehe das mit dem Design ganz genauso. Hier in Germany wird das Wort Design viel zu oft missbraucht und der eigentliche Gedanke dabei meistens vergessen. Ich glaube, dass ihr an eurem Zeil und unterwegs viel Kreativität findet, die euer Ziel näher bringt, denn in diesen Ländern Afrikas ist ein großes Potential vorhanden, das man nur wecken muss.
Ich wünsche euch alles Gute und viele positive Erfahrungen. Werde öfter eure Seite anschauen um zu sehen wie ihr weiterkommt. Monica

UPDATE: Staffan and Frank are in Moyale, which is a town at the main border crossing between Ethiopia and Kenya. The car is still leaking oil, but they are to fix it when they come to Nair, I put in their new GPS-position here in their website. I write more, when I hear more from them. LOVE/Emma

Joerg, If you want more frequently information about Staffan and Frank, you can e-mail me - Staffan can give you my address. I talked to Staffan the day before yesterday and he and Frank are doing good, but Sally had to return to the car repair since she still was sick after the first check. So their plans of leaving Addis on sunday failed, but hopefully they have left for Nairobi now. He said that they probably will arrive Sunday 23rd at the latest. I am a worried girlfriend, but I keep my fingers crossed that the rain wont stop them going down there as planned. LOVE/Emma

WE ARE (almost) OK!
Sorry for the long wait, everyone. We are now in Addis, where we had to make a stop to once again make repairs to the car. This time the engine was crying for attention so we have done a complete engine overhaul. Both of us are fine, except from some small bacterias that are making a mess in our stomaches. Today we sent down some antibiotics so hopefully order will be restored within shortly. We have updates for Egypt and Sudan ready to go on the website but unfortunatly we still haven't found a connection fast enough to let us access the website. We heard a rumour that Sheraton might provide us with a DSL connection and we will try to find out soon. Anyway, we
are planning to leave Addis on Monday and hopefully arrive in Nairobi a week after that.

Sorry for the lack of updates but the last weeks has been really intense and exhausting travel. Updates are on the way though and we can promise you many good pictures. At the moment we are in Gonder, Ethiopia after passing through Egypt and Sudan. We are both a bit tired and it is sometimes hard being far away from loved ones and family but we are really looking forward to Nairobi in which we will arrive in 1-2 weeks. inzwischen bin ich sehr neugierig und auch ein wenig neidisch bei eurem Abenteuer mit dabei. Bin schon fast süchtig auf Neues was so mit euch Beiden passiert. Ein Lob für das interressant geführte Tagebuch und die Bilder. In Gedanken fahre ich ja auch mit und erlebe aufgrund meiner vielen Reisen in diese Regionen vieles wieder.
Während Ihr X-treme driving macht, bin ich beim X-treme Jobbing angekommen. Arbeite zur Zeit für einen Messeservice und komme überhaupt nicht mehr zum DJing. Manchmal 24 Std. fullservice für Messen in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart. Komme gerade von der Cebitin Hannover, wo ich Material mit einem LKW hintransportiert habe. Mußte während der Fahrt an Euch denken und habe dann kurz die Mail geschrieben. Falle jetzt erst mal ins Bett zum träumen.

we missed you,and even more in the wadi rum....eventhought we had our little tear it was splendid.....
we had some great dives (etienne almost died ....of fear but he is ok now)
we ended up in jerusalem,don t know why but it is cool (and back to our temperatures cause it is freezing out there)

I was very sorry to hear that you cound not get a visa for saudi arabia. I am even more sorry that I could not help you to get one, but after discussing matters, I could not see a possibility to help you guys around. I have just been skiing and are really jealous to see the weather conditions you are in at the moment. Hopefully summer will be here shortly.

Det verkar ha tjorvat ihop sig lite för er. Hade en kompis som bossade över service för Volvolastbilar boende i Saudi. Tyvärr var det alldeles för längesedan så det var inte användbart. En idé är ju at kontakta ett stort företag med kontor i Saudi typ Volvo, Landrover eller liknande, inbjudan och bytande av marknadsföringstjänster, vad vet jag? Ett annat förslag (som ni förmodligen inte ser som en utväg) är att konvertera till islam och begära Hajj transitvisa. He he. försöker hitta en inflytelserik Saudier så länge. Vad gör Refat nu för tiden förresten. Mycket kärlek till er båda. Det ordnar sig!

Hey staff and frank,
we met lot of traveler got stock in amman, because there is no change to get a transit visa. Now you know that too. We got transit visa up from sudan to jordan. But no one got one down. Motorbikes will get no visa at all. You should have try to get one in Germany, but there you get one for flying in and it is not sure they let you through with a flight visa at the boarder.
As soon as you have invitation and get a transit visa, it will be no problem, because there is a regular ferry service from djiddah to port sudan. (there are two ferry companies and one of them is the Company of the Ferry which sunk a few days ago on the way to Egypt). It dosn\\\ matter which company you take, they coast are almost the same and it only belongs to the day of traveling (they travel several times a week).
If you get no invitation you have to choose the very expensive but nice landscape way from aqaba to egypt and the halsabschneider on lake nasser.
Don\\\ be afraid of crossing sudan.
The war ist officially not really a war and is used to be in Dafur. So if you traverse sudan to ethiopia on the usual two legs (along the nile or along the railway to kartoum), it is like everywhere: Here they will tell you in the next country they will going to eat you, but when you arrive there the people are much friendlier than everywhere else.
There was a warning of the germany Aussenministerium of night drives around Kassala becouse of rebel activities. As far as you don\\\ try to cross from north to south throught the war zone at bar el gazal to get into uganda, you have no more risk than a normal travel risk. Crossing into south of Sudan directly from North or heading to jebel mara or boarderzone to chad it might be dangerous. To get to ethiopia direktly from khartoum there should be no problem in the moment (in africa everything can change quickly).

Seriously, unless the King of Sweden is going to intervene, they are not going to get a Visa for Saudi. They don give out tourist visas per se and they too will note that the Kingdom is not a natural transit point from Jordan to Africa. Your friends have got themselves in a pickle because any East Coast traverse of Africa now means they have to go through the Sudan - where there is a war on by the way. The best thing they can do at this point is book freight passage down to Tanzania from Aqaba."

es war eine große freude für mich euch auf der ispo kennenlernen zu dürfen. habe euch über eure pläne ausgequetscht und wir haben über unserer landys gefachsimpelt (`87 ninety, der leider noch nicht reisefertig ist weil nicht zuverlässig, mit dem gleichen motor wie sally und genau so "schnell" aber mit hubdach)
mache mir etwas sorgen um euch da der letzte tagebucheintrag schon so lange her ist, hoffe ihr seid wieder "on the road" un sally ist wieder am laufen.
ich beneide euch um den mut und die zuversicht die ihr ausstrahlt und ich wünschte mir ich wäre noch mal in eurer situation: gerade das studium erfolgreich hinter sich gebracht, alles ist offen die welt liegt euch zu füßen und ihr könnt tun was ihr wollt. hätte gerne hier alles stehen und liegen gelassen und hätte euch als begleitfahrzeug unterstützt, aber wenn man erst mal in die welt der selbständigkeit eingebunden ist dann geht das nicht mehr so einfach.
laßt euch bitte nicht von den zweiflern und kritikern hier im gästebuch ärgern, das was ihr macht ist aufrichtig, ehrlich und nobel, was ihr genau damit bewirken könnt, kann niemand genau voraussagen, aber ihr versucht wenigstens was zu verändern und gebt große opfer dafür. jeder der daran zweufelt der sollte einmal in einem alten landy quer durch deutschland fahren udn dann kann er annähernd erahnen wie es euch gerade bei minusgraden auf schlechten strassen geht. ...und das ist ja erst der anfang...
drücke euch auf alle fälle ganz doll die daumen, wünsche euch gute instinkte, viel erfolg und wünsch euch das wohlwollen aller menschen denen ihr unterwegs begegnen werdet. meins ist euch sicher, würde mich sehr freuen, falls ihr auf dem rückweg wieder durch münchen kommt, euch auf ein bier oder zwei einladen zu dürfen und wenn ihr zeit haben solltet dann schaut mal auf meine site (amplify-group.de).

Auf der einen Seite gute Idee, auf der anderen, mußte ich hier auch erstmal herausfinden, worum es geht. "Design for Africa" - das Motto finde ich vermessen. Sie bringen Afrikanern bei, wie die besser leben können. Ich glaube die haben eine eigene Krativität im Überlebenskampf, die man nur lernt., wenn man nix hat.
Sinnvoller wäre vielleicht die Umkehrung "Design from Afrika". Sie fahren da hin, informieren sich, dokumentieren und verbreiten Ihr Wissen in Europa. Afrika hat in Europa Akzeptanz-Probleme und wird im Handel benachteiligt und diktiert. Die Menschen haben hier Angst vom Fremden Schwarzen Mann überrannt zu werden und versperren ihre Grenzen. Die meisten Afrikaner hingegen empfangen den weißen Patron.
Es hätte auch heißen können Design for Kenya - Afrika ist irrwitzig groß und völlig verschieden.

Hej pojkar! Det är så kul att läsa vad ni skriver om era upplevelser (och även vad besökarna skriver i gästboken)! Det är bara ett fel med hemsidan - den är beroendeframkallande! Man är helt enkelt tvungen att kolla minst en gång om dagen och när ni inte har skrivit på ett par dagar blir man först orolig och sedan lite sur och tänker "Vad håller dom på med nu istället för att ge oss lite mer bilder och information?" Hur som helst så kollade jag lite om Istanbul (som föresten hette Konstantinopel fram till 1930 på tal om mina funderingar när vi pratades vid). Jag läste ett resereportage som Nicklas Kämpargård hade skrivit där han beskriver Den blå moskén. Den måste ni passa på att se när ni ändå måste stanna ett tag i Istanbul. I övrigt lär det vara billigt att åka taxi i denna 15 milj. stad. Hoppas det går bra med Sally och allt annat.

Design muss sein, das stimmt - und genau deshalb fahren wir nach Afrika. Wie Du in unserer Projektbeschreibung lesen kannst, wollen wir vorrangig ins Bewußtsein bringen, dass Design ein Arbeitsprozess ist Probleme zu lösen - und das auch in armen Regionen der Welt, wie in Afrika. Wie Du lesen kannst ist es ein Projekt und somit werden Ergebnisse folgen. Ich denke nicht, dass Du im Design einen Lösungskatalog erwarten kannst.
Mit dem Projekt wollen wir zum einen zeigen und ins Bewusstsein bringen, dass Design eben nicht nur Styling und ne schicke Verpackung ist, um den Konsum anzukurbeln, sondern dass man selbst im Slum die Lebenssituation verbessern kann. Klar, wir hätten auch nach Nairobi fliegen können - aber erstens reisen wir zu gerne,zweitens bekommt man durch die Reise per Auto mehr Aufmerksamkeit für die Sache an sich und drittens gibt uns die Reise die Möglichkeit uns auf die Lebensbedingungen in Afrika besser vorbereiten zu können.
Wir würden uns freuen, wenn im Forum auch designrelevante Dinge besprochen werden. Aber man kann in einem öffentlichen Forum wohl keinem vorschreiben, was er dazu beiträgt, oder? Wenn das Projekt aber erst einmal läuft, gibt es noch genügend Diskussionsstoff, denke ich.

Ett par hundra meter efter ni lämnat metropolerna Grums och Slottsbron bakom er på E18 passerade jag Er jeep. Jag vinkade och ropade Lycka till!!! Vill bara förvissa mig om att ni hörde det!! Jag fällde en liten tår också av välmenad avundsjuka ..... jag har hela mitt liv varit på väg i min fantasi genom Afrika!!! Hallo Frank, vielleicht kannst du dich noch an mich erinnern! Wir waren zusammen in den ersten beiden Schuljahren auf der Grundschule in Sillenbuch. Und später hatten wir noch viel Spaß beim "Rollhocky" auf dem Schulhof als uns der Schulischeweg bereits getrennt hatte.
Ich habe Eueren "Landy" auf der Straße gesehen und war sofort fasziniert, das es Menschen gibt die sich heute noch dieser Herausforderung stellen durch Africa mit dem 4x4 zu reisen.
Ich bin durch meine langjährige Freundin Jenny schon 2001 von einem Virus infiziert worden welcher unter Insidern "Africafieber" genannt wird. Every two years, Cape Town is going to be our journey highlight. She wrote her Matrik there, and lives now in Stuttgart in my flat in the Buowaldstraße near your homebase in Friedingerstraße.

Ich möchte euch miitteilen, wie begeistert ich von eurem Projekt bin und wie gerne ich mitmachen würde. Ich war diesen Sommer mit meier alten Botschafter Tante in Malawi und habe mir ähnliche Projekte wie eures erträumt. Seit dem Sommer hat sich mein Herz mit Afrika verankert. Mit Design ist dies schon seit einiger Zeit geschehen. Ich habe gerade nach einem Jahr Chelsea College of Art and Design in Berlin Weissensee angefangen Produktdesign zu studieren. Ich würde gern mehr von euch hören, wenn ihr mit eurer Arbeit begonnen habt und bin stets Bereit mit eigeneeinsatz zu helfen, falls dies benötigt wird.

Poverty can only be eradicated if the African people are equipped with new skills to solve their problems and you guys will help us identify and understand the skills that we possess, learn new and how we can then utilise them in a more productive manner.

Hi everyone!
First of all we would like to say thanks to everyone who emailed us and offer their support or just shown their interest in our project. We are trying to answer all the emails as soon as we can. Both me and Frank are now working double full time to finish our educations. I have 5 weeks left to presentation of my diploma project, which will be a new concept for roof top tents for expedition use. Guess where that idea came from... Frank is also working hard writing his thesis about "Design as a development tool for third world countries". So even if our minds are not thinking that much about the trip right now there is no doubt where our hearts are...

Hello,
My name is Alaa, Ive always had the dream of touring Africa, and now the time has come, and i just bought myself a Toyota Landcruiser prepared it in Japan for Crossing Africa. My dream is to do the Eastern African Crossing which is from Egypt to Cape town. At a stage I thought of driving from Egypt through Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and meet anyone taking the west to east crossing.
I might still do it, it really all depends on coordinating and studying the route with who ever Id team up with.
The main objective of this trip is to fulfill a dream Ive had ever since I was a little boy aged 11 years old. My parents accepted a Job in Mali Bamako simply because my father has always been in love with Africa, and living there for 4 years has really changed my entire life. It is so true that Quote: To Travel is not a verb, it is a lifestyle Unquote. And my second objective travelling through Africa taking photographs of people, landscapes and wildlife.
Im looking for road partners, as Im alone so far and my family might come meet me in Tanzania, joining the crossing till Cape Town, Would you know anyone looking for a partner, or who might want me to join ?

I like the idea that you have here. Myself and a friend are leaving for Cape Town in August (hopefully), on a similar route mainly sticking to the coast to find some new surf spots. We aim to cross the continent through the CAR, how realistic this route is we dont yet know.
Your journey was of particular interest to me, as I am a Product Design graduate from Brunel University, London. I large part of my final year was concerned with Environmentally Sensitive and Sustainable Design, so if theres anything I can do to help, let me know!

Om ni inte visste det så är Afrika en annan kontinent. Ligger jättelångt bort. Visserligen så låter de flesta där som om dom kommer från Bograngen men ni kommer nog att märka skillnad. Land Rovern kan ni få byta mot min Far Away pugart 205 xs. Den har stolsvärme vilket kan komma väl till pass i kalla Afrika samt x-ljus. Dessutom drar den bara 0.6 vilket defenitivt borde dra ner resekostnaderna. Skön sida men det tog tid att få upp den på min commodore.
